Oakleigh… THE Greek suburb of Melbourne. Expectations are at the absolute highest standards when going out in Oakleigh. Competition is everywhere. In Oakleigh you will find Greek pubs, Greek cafes, Greek Souvlaki, Greek Fine Dining, Greek hangouts, Greek Private Functions, Greek, Greek, Greek…
It wasn’t long ago that my husband found a Scoopon voucher for Dream Cakes Cafe in Oakleigh. Of course, we jumped on it!
The offer:
It never occurred to me that we wouldn’t get anything but the best. After all, it’s Oakleigh!
Sometimes though it may be the people and the event that makes the place and not necessarily the place itself. To be honest, this is how I feel. I was in such a happy state that my judgement is tainted. For the sake of argument, let’s just say it was both. You see, today is our 5 year anniversary. We were lucky enough to have the entire day to ourselves and it did not dissappoint. By the time we got to the restaurant we had seen a Gold Class movie at the Jam Factory, gone for drinks and tapas at Cafe Republic on Toorak Road AND played the pokies and bet at a race at the local TAB pub. It has been a big day.
Dream Cakes Cafe also did not disappoint. When we walked in to Dream Cakes Cafe we were greeted with a big smile and an offer of drinks. Of course, it wasn’t the standard offer. I think it went something like “I think that’s a bottle of Merlot behind the box on the bar and I’m sure I can find a bottle of white somewhere”. If nothing else it only added to our entertainment and amusement. I have since discovered that Dream Cakes Cafe is actually famous for its coffees! (duh!)
As we were walking to our seats I noticed an entire table dedicated to candles and decorations. The woman working at the table called me over and explained to me that she was making Easter candles. They were actually very sweet. She was making them for all ages and all genders. There was even a Wiggles candle! Of course being Jewish and the candles being out of our price range we thanked the lady and took our seats.
Not long after we were served our wine, our table was cleaned and water was brought to the table. We were ready for our HUGE Platter of Greek Fillo Pastries.
The platter was huge! According to my loving husband the platter was delicious! He loved the different flavours (cheese & spinach varieties). I personally found them bland but that’s apparently due to my over consumption of food and alcohol. Considering he had to roll me out of the restaurant I think he’s right! In truth I gobbled them up faster than he did and enjoyed every bite. My only suggestion is variety rather than quantity. There is only so much fillo with spinach and cheese that one person should consume.
Next we were served a delicious dessert of (more) fillo with hot custard and ice-cream. It was amazing.
Next the SIX Homemade Greek Desserts…
Yah Right! Like that was going to happen!
This must have been a common problem because they knowingly offered to let us take our desserts and our sample box of biscuits home with us. We were allowed to go to the cake display and choose six desserts; basically anything we wanted! Unfotunately, I can’t tell you how good they were because they are still sitting in front of me. I think I’ll have to save this to tomorrow night!!
Dream Cakes Cafe is out of the way. They are not on the main strip, they don’t have the mass of clientele that the other cafe’s have and they have a much smaller variety of cakes and biscuits to choose from.
BUT…
It was an absolutely lovely experience.
…. and I definatley want to go back and try their coffee!
